ISO 45001 Lead Auditor: the Certificate, the Exam, the Career
An ISO 45001 lead auditor is the person who plans, conducts, and reports the ISO 45001 audit — the stage 1, the stage 2, the surveillance, and the recertification. The route to the certificate runs through the IAS 19011 (the audit foundation and the lead auditor course) and the ISO 45001 auditor course (the standard itself). This guide is the lead auditor in working form: the certificate, the exam, the IAS, the registrar, and the career — the path from the HSE officer to the lead auditor, and the lead auditor to the certification body.

The lead auditor: who walks the audit
The ISO 45001 lead auditor plans the audit, conducts it, and reports the finding — for the certification body, on the stage 1 and the stage 2. The lead auditor writes the audit plan, opens the audit with the opening meeting, interviews the worker, reviews the document, checks the evidence on the floor, and closes with the finding: the conformance, the minor nonconformity, the major nonconformity.
The lead auditor has to be independent — the person who audits an area cannot be the person who owns it. Inside the organisation, the clause 9.2 (the internal audit) runs on the same principle, and the internal auditor applies the same technique to the own site. The lead auditor qualification takes that technique to the external audit: the certification, the surveillance, the recertification — the full cycle.
The certificate: IAS 19011 and the ISO 45001 course
The lead auditor certificate is the two parts. The first is the IAS 19011 — the audit foundation and the lead auditor course: the audit principle, the audit process, the audit programme, the audit plan, the conduct of the audit, and the reporting. The IAS 19011 is the International Accreditation Service standard for the audit of any ISO management system — it covers the ISO 9001, the ISO 14001, and the ISO 45001, and it is built on the ISO 19011 guidelines.
The second is the ISO 45001 auditor course — the standard itself, the clause by clause, from the clause 4 (the context) to the clause 10 (the improvement), with the OHS risk, the hierarchy of controls, the consultation of the worker, and the emergency preparedness. The two together are the ISO 45001 lead auditor: the audit technique, plus the OHS depth.
The exam: the written and the practical
The exam is the two parts. The written is the knowledge: the IAS 19011 (the audit principle, the audit process) and the ISO 45001 (the clause 4 to the clause 10), set as the multiple choice and the scenario — the scenario is the audit situation, and the candidate has to decide the next step. The pass mark is typically 70 percent.
The practical is the audit simulation: the mock stage 1 and the mock stage 2. The candidate runs the opening meeting, interviews the simulated worker, reviews the document set, and raises the finding — the minor and the major, with the evidence. The candidate who passes both parts is the certified ISO 45001 lead auditor.
IAS: the standard, and the registrar
The IAS is the International Accreditation Service — the US accreditation body. The IAS 19011 is its standard for the audit qualification, and the IAS 19011 certificate is the audit-technique side of the lead auditor qualification.
The registrar is the certification body — the organisation that runs the stage 1 and the stage 2 and issues the certificate. The registrar works under the accreditation: the UKAS in the UK, the ANAB in the US, the JAS-ANZ in the Australia — and the mutual recognition (the IAF MLA) is what makes the certificate international. The lead auditor works for the registrar, for the client internal audit programme, or for the consultancy that supports the client.
The career: the site, the audit, the registrar
The path runs four steps. The HSE officer owns the site — the risk assessment, the inspection, the near-miss. The HSE manager owns the system — the ISO 45001, the internal audit programme, the management review. The lead auditor owns the audit — the stage 1, the stage 2, the surveillance. The registrar is the certification body — the accreditation, the scheme, the certificate.
Each step is the next level of the same skill: the risk, the evidence, the finding. The lead auditor is the most direct bridge to the registrar — the registrar hires the lead auditor, and the lead auditor who knows the OHS standard at the clause level is the one the registrar is looking for.

ISO 45001 Internal Auditor vs Lead Auditor (the Difference)
The internal auditor runs the audit inside the system, on the audit programme, for the management review — the competence is the IAS 19011 principles plus the 45001 knowledge, and the certificate is the ISO 45001 internal auditor course. The lead auditor runs the audit for the certification body, on the stage 1 and the stage 2 — the competence is the IAS 19011 plus the 45001 depth, and the certificate is the lead auditor course with the written and the practical exam. The internal auditor is the step into the audit career; the lead auditor is the step into the certification and the consultancy. The two are not the same credential, and the CV that shows the progression is the CV the audit team recognises.
IMS Auditor: ISO 45001 + 14001 + 9001 on One Calendar
The integrated management system (IMS) audit runs the three systems — the 45001, the 14001 and the 9001 — on one audit programme, one set of documents, one management review. The structure is the same (the Annex SL, the clauses 4 to 10), and the integrated audit is the efficient one: the context is shared, the leadership is shared, the performance evaluation is shared, and the finding is one, not three. The IMS auditor holds the multi-standard competence — the IAS 19011 plus the standard knowledge — and the integrated management system audit is the credential the multistandard site asks for. The course pair is in the ISO courses family: the 45001 and the 14001 internal and lead auditor.

Common questions
ISO 45001 Lead Auditor — answered
What is an ISO 45001 lead auditor?
The person who plans, conducts, and reports the ISO 45001 audit: the stage 1, the stage 2, the surveillance, the recertification. The lead auditor writes the audit plan, runs the opening meeting, interviews the worker, checks the evidence, and reports the finding — the conformance, the minor, the major — then follows up the corrective action.
How do you become an ISO 45001 lead auditor?
The two certificates: the IAS 19011 (the foundation and the lead auditor, the audit technique) and the ISO 45001 auditor course (the standard, the clause by clause). The exam is the written (the knowledge) and the practical (the audit simulation). The typical course is the 5 days (the 2-day foundation, the 3-day lead auditor), and the pass mark is typically 70 percent.
What is IAS 19011?
The International Accreditation Service standard for the audit qualification: the audit principle, the audit process, the audit programme, the audit plan, the conduct of the audit, and the reporting. The IAS 19011 covers the audit of any ISO management system (the 9001, the 14001, the 45001), built on the ISO 19011 guidelines. With the ISO 45001 auditor course, the two are the lead auditor certificate.
What is the difference between an internal auditor and a lead auditor?
The internal auditor (the clause 9.2) audits the own organisation — the system, the site, the evidence, on the internal audit programme. The lead auditor audits for the certification body, or for the client, on the stage 1 and the stage 2 — the external audit. The technique is the same; the lead auditor qualification is the external one, and the independence requirement is the key: the auditor cannot audit the own area.
What is the ISO 45001 lead auditor exam like?
The two parts. The written: the multiple choice and the scenario, covering the IAS 19011 and the ISO 45001. The practical: the audit simulation — the mock stage 1 and the mock stage 2, the opening meeting, the interview, the document review, the finding. The pass mark is typically 70 percent. The candidate who passes both is the certified lead auditor.
Is the ISO 45001 lead auditor certificate worth it?
Yes — the lead auditor is the audit side of the HSE career, and the audit side is the international one. The certificate opens the registrar path (the certification body), the senior internal audit role, and the OHS consultancy. The HSE professional who can run the stage 1 and the stage 2 is the one the market pays for.
